Probiotic Science
One culture.
One daily purpose.
Every fermented milk we make is built around one carefully chosen culture — selected for a specific, researched daily wellness purpose. Here's the science behind each one.
One culture.
One focused purpose.
Multi-culture blends make convenient marketing but poor science. Cultures compete for the same gut real estate. When you consume ten at once, none colonize effectively — and you have no idea what's actually doing what.
Each of our Valley, Reserve, and Summit fermented milks focuses on a single well-researched culture. You know exactly what's in it, why it's there, and what the published research shows it supports. Our Classic Yogurt uses the traditional cultures that have supported digestive wellness for generations.

About our claims: Vital Yogurts is a conventional food product. All descriptions below are structure/function statements about how these probiotic cultures support normal body functions — not claims to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. All statements are truthful and supported by published research.
Gut Foundation
These five cultures share a common foundation: their primary documented effects are in the digestive system and metabolic balance. They support normal gut transit, microbial balance, digestive comfort, and healthy body composition. Start here if everyday digestion or metabolic wellness is your priority.
L. gasseri is one of the most studied Lactobacillus cultures for supporting healthy body composition. Multiple randomized controlled trials have documented meaningful reductions in visceral fat area, body weight, waist circumference, and BMI versus placebo. It works by modulating sugar absorption and fat metabolism, producing exopolysaccharides that influence adipogenesis, and supporting immune-modulating activity through MnSOD production.
Research: Kadooka et al. BJCN 2013; Kim et al. JMICROBIOL 2022; Frontiers in Nutrition 2023 systematic reviewS. boulardii is unique — it's a probiotic yeast, not a bacterium, which means antibiotics cannot affect it. A meta-analysis of 84 clinical studies ranked it as the most effective single agent for maintaining normal gut function during disruptions. It maintains gut barrier integrity, modulates the mucosal immune response, and temporarily colonizes to protect the microbiome when it's most vulnerable.
Research: NIH-ODS 2024 review; McFarland meta-analysis; 84-study analysis; SPAADA multicenter trial 2024B. coagulans is a spore-forming probiotic that survives stomach acid completely intact. In a 2021 network meta-analysis of 29 RCTs involving 15 different probiotic species, B. coagulans ranked first for improving global digestive comfort scores — significantly outperforming all others tested. Paired with B. subtilis for K2 production and pathogen competition.
Research: PMC network meta-analysis 2022; Majeed et al. RCT 2016; SPAADA trial 2024L. acidophilus is one of the most extensively studied probiotics in human history. It produces lactic acid that creates an inhospitable environment for pathogenic bacteria, supports normal lactose digestion, and stimulates antibody production for normal immune function. A meta-analysis of 30 RCTs confirmed meaningful cholesterol-supporting effects.
Research: NIH-ODS cholesterol meta-analysis 30 RCTs 2024; Pharmacy Times clinical reviewL. casei has one of the broadest evidence bases of any probiotic — research spans digestive regularity, immune cell activity, and mood. It supports normal bowel transit, modulates inflammatory signaling in the gut lining, and stimulates natural killer cells and antibody production. The Shirota strain has shown consistent mood score improvements in human trials.

Body & Defense
These four cultures work primarily at the systemic level — supporting normal immune function, antioxidant activity, cellular protection, and intimate microbiome balance. Their documented effects extend beyond the gut to how the whole body maintains and protects itself daily.
B. infantis is the dominant microbe in the gut of breastfed infants and plays a foundational role in educating the immune system from its earliest days. In adults, it reduces inflammatory markers in the gut lining, strengthens the intestinal barrier, and supports the normal maturation of immune responses. An 8-week RCT showed significantly improved global digestive comfort scores versus placebo.
Research: Groeger et al. inflammatory markers; O'Mahony IBS RCT; PMC IBS network meta-analysis 2022B. subtilis is a spore-forming organism with a long history of safe human use. Its most distinctive contribution: it produces antimicrobial peptides that directly compete with pathogenic bacteria and yeast in the gut. It supports normal immune function through macrophage activation and is one of the few probiotic organisms known to produce Vitamin K2 (MK-7), which plays a role in calcium metabolism and normal bone maintenance.
Research: ScienceDirect Bacillus overview; B. subtilis K2 production literature; Knapen et al. MK-7 RCT 2013L. fermentum stands out for its antioxidant production — it synthesizes compounds that help neutralize oxidative stress at the cellular level. Research shows it supports normal liver function by reducing lipid accumulation and hepatic oxidative stress markers. Human trials in athletes show it supports normal respiratory wellness under physical stress and modulates the normal immune response.
Research: Kullisaar et al. BJCN antioxidant fermented milk; L. fermentum liver protection 2023; athlete respiratory trialsL. crispatus is the single most dominant Lactobacillus species in a healthy vaginal microbiome — and the most protective. It produces both lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide, maintaining the acidic pH environment that supports natural protection and microbial balance. Its presence or absence is one of the clearest measurable markers of intimate microbiome wellness. Specifically intended for women's daily intimate microbiome support.

Mood & Mind
Only two of our cultures belong in this classification. The bar for psychobiotic evidence is high — not every probiotic supports mood, and we won't pretend otherwise. These two have the most specific, replicated human clinical trial data for supporting emotional balance, normal stress response, and the gut-mood connection.
L. reuteri is the only probiotic with a confirmed mechanism for stimulating oxytocin production in the intestinal epithelium itself — discovered at Baylor College of Medicine and published in Gut Microbes in 2023. The mechanism: L. reuteri stimulates enteroendocrine cells to release secretin, which triggers enterocytes to produce oxytocin directly in the gut. This explains how it supports emotional balance, normal social behavior, and wound healing — all oxytocin-dependent processes.
Research: Danhof et al. Gut Microbes 2023 (Baylor); FASEB Journal 2025; Britton et al. bone density 2014; Frontiers Neuroscience 2024Sedona is built on two cultures — because this specific combination was developed and clinically tested together as a unit. The L. helveticus R0052 + B. longum R0175 pairing is the most researched psychobiotic combination in the world. A 2011 study reduced global scores on validated anxiety and depression scales in healthy volunteers after 30 days. A 2023 RCT found B. longum alone significantly reduced perceived psychological stress versus placebo.
